Steamboat Sultana was a passenger ship that sailed the Mississippi river, was destroyed in an explosion on April 27, 1865. This event is recorded as the world's worst maritime tragedy in the United States. An estimated 1,800 of the 2,400 passengers were killed when one of the four boiler (furnace heating) exploded, Sultana sank not far from Memphis Tennessee. Most of the passengers were former prisoners of the Confederate troops who were sent back to their homes. Explosion due to leakage and lack of maintenance of the stove caused the destruction of half of the hull and a hot coal that burns away the rest of the floating hull.
